Simplify a complex environment with at least two figures into a compelling visual narrative
This piece of work is inspired by the work of WashU alumnus Al Parker. Mr. Parker was the leading magazine illustrator in the mid-20th century and among the first to incorporate the formal elements of Modernism into commercial illustration.
The mid-century field of periodical fiction illustration relied on the use of illustrated figures to create interest in the opening spread of a piece of fiction. Typically three or four such stories would appear on succeeding spreads, each cued to the resumption of the story in the back of the magazine. As seen in the examples below, the effect created was a sequential competition between the illustrators to lure the reader.
For my narrative editorial piece, I decided to have it grayscale plus one hue, red. In my illustration, the story I wanted to tell is a sweet revenge story of a waitress after months of pent-up anger against this customer. The storytelling is accomplished through the figures and their attributes.
